Every candle brand has an opinion about wax, and almost all of them sell the wax they happen to use. So here is the comparison written the other way around: what actually differs between soy and paraffin, what is genuinely unsettled, and where the popular claims are weaker than they sound.

What the two waxes actually are
Paraffin is refined from petroleum. It has been the standard candle wax since the nineteenth century, it is cheap, it is consistent batch to batch, and the entire candle industry's manufacturing knowledge was built on it.
Soy wax is hydrogenated soybean oil. Hydrogenation turns the liquid oil into a solid with a high proportion of stearic acid. It arrived commercially in the 1990s, which by candle standards is last week.
Soy blends — which is what most "soy candles" on the market actually are, ours included — mix soy with something else to fix soy's practical problems. Common blend partners are coconut wax, beeswax, palm, and, yes, paraffin.
Where soy genuinely wins
Burn time
Soy melts at a lower temperature than paraffin, so for the same jar and a comparable wick it generally burns slower and lasts longer. This is the least disputed difference between the two.
Cleanup
Soy is water-soluble enough that warm soapy water will get the residue out of a jar. Spilled paraffin on a tablecloth is a different afternoon entirely.
Feedstock
Soybean oil is an annually grown crop; paraffin is a petroleum product. That is a real difference in where the raw material comes from. It is not the same as a full lifecycle comparison, which would have to account for agriculture, land use and processing, and we have not seen a comparison rigorous enough to quote.
Where paraffin genuinely wins
Scent throw
Paraffin generally carries and releases fragrance more strongly than soy. This is the honest reason a lot of the best-known scented candle brands still use it or blend it. If your priority is a candle that fills a large room quickly, paraffin has the advantage.
Appearance and consistency
Paraffin sets smooth and stays smooth. Soy is temperamental: it frosts, it develops crystalline patches on the surface, and it can pull away from the glass in cold weather. None of that affects how it burns. It does mean a soy candle can look slightly imperfect and be entirely fine.
Cost
Paraffin is cheaper per pound, and more predictable to work with at volume.
The "paraffin is toxic" claim, honestly
This is the claim that sells soy candles, and it deserves a straight look.
Most versions of it trace back to a single piece of research from South Carolina State University, presented in summary form at a scientific conference in 2009 and widely reported at the time. That research was never published in a peer-reviewed journal. The National Candle Association, which is the U.S. trade body, publicly disputed it in 2015 and again in 2017, calling the conclusions unsubstantiated and asking the university to stop promoting them.
Two things follow, and both matter:
First, the strong claim — that burning a paraffin candle exposes you to dangerous levels of carcinogens — is not supported by a body of peer-reviewed evidence. It is repeated across thousands of candle product pages anyway, including by people selling soy.
Second, the counter-claim comes from the industry's own trade association, which is not a neutral party either.
Our position is that we do not know of evidence good enough to tell you paraffin candles are dangerous, and we are not going to imply it in order to sell you soy. If you want to burn soy, burn soy. The burn-time and cleanup arguments stand on their own.
What is well established, and is true of any candle regardless of wax, is that burning things indoors produces particulates. Ventilate the room, do not burn candles all day in a small closed space, and follow the basics in our guide to how to burn a candle properly.
What "soy blend" means, and what it does not
"Soy wax blend" describes what the wax is mostly made from. It is not a term with a fixed recipe behind it, and different manufacturers mean different ratios by it.
Ours is a natural soy wax blend with a 100% cotton wick. It is not 100% soy, and we are not going to print "100% soy" on a page where it would not be accurate. We do not publish the exact blend ratio because it is our manufacturing partner's formulation rather than ours — Occasora does not pour candles, it designs the labels and has them produced.
If a brand tells you their candle is pure soy, that is a reasonable thing to ask them to confirm in writing. Plenty of "soy" candles on the market are blends and do not say so.
How to choose, in one paragraph
If you want maximum fragrance intensity across a large open-plan room, look at paraffin or a paraffin blend and do not feel bad about it. If you want a longer burn, an easier jar to reuse, and a plant-derived feedstock, soy or a soy blend is the better fit. If a brand's entire argument is that the other wax will hurt you, be a little suspicious of the brand.
A short honest closing
Wax is the least interesting thing about a gift candle. Nobody has ever been moved by a wax specification. What the candle says on the front is what the recipient actually reads — which is why our birthday candles name the birthday and our sympathy candles name the loss.
Ours are 9 oz, about 2.8 by 3.5 inches, roughly 50 to 60 hours, nine scent options, $36, assembled in the USA from globally sourced parts. The scent name is never printed on the label, because the label is there to name the occasion.
